I may have started this trend many years ago. Used 10-40 T&B as it was called at the time as I had it on hand for a diesel car. My NG-900 seemed quieter, smoother and stronger. The smoother and quieter operation may have given the impression of more power. On boost, these engines have effective compression ratios that are in the NA diesel range and spark ignition engines create higher peak pressure than a diesel at same CR when the fuel burns. In a diesel, fuel injection takes time so the whole fuel charge is not present when burn starts. The diesel engine oils also had more extreme pressure additives that are now discouraged due to hypothetical cat and O2 sensor damage, but we do not really see any hints of that. With modern diesels with particulate filters, low ash is a primary concern and some of the good additives are disappearing, so not all diesel engine oils are the same these days.
