Happiness is a clean engine and other musings Posted by Matt Grimes [Email] (#2198) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Matt Grimes) on Mon, 9 Oct 2017 13:22:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
We had a beautiful Fall weekend along the Colorado Front Range and I decided to take advantage of it by running the newish 9-3 up on the ramps, dragging out the hose, a gallon bottle of Simple Green, and several small brushes for an engine compartment cleaning party. Not too many things worse than having to work on a filthy engine…one of my little pet peeves and this car was by far, the worst I’ve had in many years. This was my fault for buying the car in a rainstorm and only having looked under the hood in a darkened garage. I should have known better, I’ve vowed never to buy a car in the dark again (previous stupidity) but somehow didn’t make the connection this time…I mean hey, it was afternoon.
Aside from wanting to have it clean for general purposes, I need to track down an oil leak (ya think?) and that can be a bit challenging when everything is covered in oily gunk. It was tedious work but in the end quite rewarding.
Through the course of the weekend I discovered a few things:
1. The PCV valve was yellowed, brittle, and stuck in the open position. This is, no doubt, a contributor to the oil leakage as the turbo has been able to pressurize the crankcase.
2. The creaky sway bar bushings are not where you generally expect to find them and the various forum posts discussing “lowering the subframe” suddenly made sense. I think this is called "Saab-ness". I hosed them down with silicon spray.
3. One of my heater hoses is distressingly soft from oil damage where it mounts to the engine and needs to be replaced asap.
4. The A/C compressor is not engaging as it should be. From what I read in the owner’s manual it should come on every time the car starts. It only does so about 20% of the time. I connected my A/C gauge to the front service port when it was running and it shows normal pressure so it’s not low on refrigerant. According to my newly installed WIS software there are a number of inputs that are needed for the computer to turn on the compressor. Looks like more sleuthing will be required. I am wondering if I had a Tech2 scanner would it tell me exactly which component is not providing the appropriate signal?
5. There is a button/switch directly aft of the window switches in the center console that is not labeled and does not show up in the owner’s manual as far as I can see. I meant to push it and see if anything happened but got distracted and forgot to go back to it. I am wondering if it activates one of those James Bond-ish oil slick devices that backfired on the previous owner and blew the oil slick all over the engine compartment. ; - )
Today it is cold, windy, and snowing. Life in Colorado.
