A dose of reality

Over the week end I tackled the job of replacing a CV joint on my 95 900SE V6. Part of the procedure is to disconnect the tie rod. In theory it's a very simple task but as usual reality bites.
Theory:
1. Remove the nut securing the tie rod to the steering arm.
2. Insert the forked end of the tie rod separator tool under the tie rod end. (The blunt end doesn't work nearly as well ;-)
3. Wail on the aforementioned tool with a suitably large hammer until the shaft pops out of the tapered hole.
Reality:
1. Remove the nut securing the tie rod to the steering arm. During this procedure the tapered shaft pops out of the tapered hole on its own. Some bean counter at Saab discovered that they could save a bundle on cotter pins by using Ny-Lok nuts; unfortunately it is impossible to remove a self locking nut from a shaft that turns freely after 5 years of wear.
2. (optional) Utter some very unflattering speculation as to the parentage of the aforementioned bean counter.
3. Get out the disk grinder and grind the nut off the shaft.
4. Replace the tie rod end because of damaged threads.
