Hi Matt
i too have picked up an older Viggen and am working through issues like you...
i have a similar noise too! havent figured it out yet..
but i did pull the chain tensioner this past weekend and the gap is at 15 mm, which is certainly in the repair or replace realm. its an easy job for you to do, 12 mm socket for the 'cap, spring and plunger' and a 27 mm socket for the main body, plus a breaker bar. get the o ring and the seal before you start. all told might be 30 minute job if you take your time. easy to get to as well, on the block.
As LMS says, replacing the tensioner wont solve the problem, you need to replace the chain, chain guides etc in order to tighten things up. the sprockets are probably ok.
i'm going to install the PCV kit, and replace the valve cover gasket and the upper chain guide at the same time, until i get organized enough to do the timing chain.
i've wondered if i should get the car to a dyno shop so that we can pinpoint the noise, but its likely the chain given the symptoms and situational factors...
i also have to check the motor mounts as my car is not shifting particularily well into 1st or Reverse.
any experience there? good place for affordable parts?
ps where are you located?
Wayne Sorensen
