I wanted to replace a stuck open thermostat, but did not want to drain first out of laziness. Somehow I remember (maybe incorrectly) on the 9-5 I didn't have to and the Viggen should be identical. Lots of coolant came out (i caught most of it in a drain pan) but made a small mess. Coolant pooled all over the top of the transmission. Just drain it if you are thinking about doing it. I topped off with distilled water today, probably about 3/4 gal. It does not freeze where I live so no immediate concerns.
Rest of job was fine. I had less trouble than others accessing the bolt heads. I used a shorter ratchet (1/4" drive) which required some hand strength to break loose but otherwise had no issues.
I have two concerns I discovered while doing the job:
Junk/sludge/grime in the coolant reservoir: https://photos.app.goo.gl/g37FVBCoDml08BhD2. How can I clean this? Or leave it be...
Coolant was bright green. What should I flush with and put back in? Tap water, distilled water, white vinegar?
