I talked to the owner of Coachtrimmers today about doing seat repair on a car as young as a 2000 MY vehicle, and particularly his ability to work with side cushion airbags. He wants to take a look at my Driver's seat when I get the car out of storage in a few months but the airbags were no show stopper for him.
He said he previously worked for a German company who designed airbag systems for door panels and seats. He would be INSIDE the car when the door panel or seat airbags were deliberately triggered for test purposes.
He also confirmed my suspicion of how the seat side air bag panels release, but it is only one of three different methods used. In addition to my idea of a designed failure point membrane that is part of the stitched seam he described two other methods used. A second method is to cut away the backside of the leather just inside of the stitched seam so that the leather is only paper thin. The ultra-thin leather will rupture when the air bag deploys. A third way is to perforate the leather on the backside in an X-pattern so that the leather splits on the legs of the X when the air bag deploys.
He also told me why the seat panels on our 2006 Saab 9-3 will continue to fail. Dating back almost to the end of WWII, leather used for car interiors is no longer dyed but painted. The painting of the leather makes for a perfect color match but it seals the surface and the leather dries out, then cracking and failing. He said no matter how much Lexol or other high-end leather conditioner an owner uses, the leather will still fail due to it drying out from the sealed off surface. He said there is no way for the conditioners to penetrate this barrier to actually treat the leather beneath.
I politely disagree with him slightly on this point. My view is that the leather will suffer many micro-fissures in the painted surface as it wears and ages, long before any visible cracks or splits in the leather. These micro-fissures will then be a path for the surface treatments to penetrate and soften the underlying leather to prolong its life. But he is a leather upholstery expert and I am just a Lay-man.
Hopefully sometime late in March or early in April I will know if my Driver's side seat can be repaired.
