While looking at something else on the spare transmission I have I wanted to take a closer look at what's involved in pulling the pump. I understand now why they recommend the J45053 puller and not any type of standard jaw puller... there is no relief on which to hook the jaw:



The J45053 puller features a clamp which goes around the hub... below is the SST-0033 version of this puller, generally available for about $100:



I haven't found a price on a "real" version, but as far as I can tell this one is similar, and certainly suited to a casual use. I have some other Street Side Tools and they have been fine.

Just thought I'd add this FYI in case someone else gets here. :)
