Looking for convertible info and experiences

I'll soon be putting my old 9K out to pasture. As an interim car I am driving my daughter's '99 9-3 SE (she's now an ex-pat). I like it more than I did on other drives and while it's sure not a 9K, it ain't terrible.
So I'm beginning a hunt for a '00-03 9-3 convertible. I know there are some issues with top operation and that stuff may need replacement. But I'm mostly OK with that, just hoping it's not too much at once. Everything else I can do myself or pass to my indy.
I know the mechanical stuff (other daughter had a '00 9-3 until last month), and I can suss out the res of the car, but I need to know about the top.
What should make me run away?
Is is best to replace parts as they fail or do all the electric/mechanical/hydraulic bits all at once?
Has any one done a whole top?
Are there any signs of pending failure?
What are the most common failure items?
And tell me stuff I don't know!!
If I'm looking at a roof replacement, and know it going in, how much should I figure on as a negotiating tool on the asking price (assuming it's not already in the price)?
I live in New England where many 'verts are summer cars, so it is not too hard to find a car that hasn't seen winter. That's nice for having less rust but.... is it better for a top to be used fairly often?
All input welcome!
TIA
