Recess in Head on drivers side - what is it for?

I recently had a new head gasket put on and now there is oil leaking from a rectangular recess in the head on the driver's side of the car under the DIC electrical connection. Is there some kind of seal on the inside of the recess in the head or can I just seal it from the outside? Thanks
