When I purchased my Viggen 5-1/2 years ago, one of the previous owners had removed the Viggen specific wheels and replaced them with 16-inch SE wheels. Yup, your gut churning mental picture is probably better than what it really looked like. So I scoured the local used auto parts ads and found a full set of 17-inch rims from a later 9-3SS that desperately needed refinishing. I got them at the cheap asking price and refinished them myself.
When it came time to order the performance Summer Tires to fit these rims I pondered the known facts.
- Viggens came from the factory wearing 215 tires on 17x7-1/2 inch rims
- Most owners strongly preferred the appearance of 225 size tires on the Viggen rims
- A few owners were having tire rubbing issues in the wheel wheels with the 225 width tires
- My salvaged SAAB rims were 17x7 size, a half inch narrower, with identical off-set.
I opted for the 215 stock width tires confident they would look appropriate on my slightly narrower later rims. Attached below are three photos, two of which show the 215 Continental tires on the 17x7 rims - pretty anemic looking. The third photo is of the 205 wide Continental snow tires my 9-5 Aero wears during the winter on 6x6-1/2 inch rims. For whatever reason these look far meatier than the 215's!
So when buying new tires for your Viggen, just keep these photos in mind.
