Well, after filling my tank , I got the dreaded fuel smell inside and close to the filler. Took a look under the rear seat and could see that the edge of the fuel pump retainer ring was damp with fuel, and there was a big gap between the tank and the underside of the ring, with about 5 mm of thread exposed. Looks like I will have to drop the tank or cut an access hole. Previous owner said the pump was recently replaced, so likely leaking from a misaligned o-ring or an improperly tightened/crossthreaded ring. Did the fuel pump on a 9-5 a few years ago and it was a breeze with the pre-cut access hole, but this will be a bit of a pain by the looks of it, whichever route I take. Lots of wisdom on this board, for which I am grateful.
Time to dig up my homemade retaining ring removal tool from the dark reaches of my toolbox!
