The Tech 2 (especially the clones) have a tough time with weak capacitors keeping the voltage up during cranking and therefore conks out like you would have unplugged it.
Even my genuine (22 years old) Tech 2 is doing the same and creates quite a bit of problems, dying when I start the engine.
I have read some posts about going in and desoldering the culprit and get a sturdier one installed but I have not tried that yet.
Sounds like your CKP sensor is ok though. Maybe the fuel pump has died or IDM?
