Best to leave it if it's not too mangled. The old one does have the ring. You can just insert the new red part into it. On my 9-5, I went in through the opening in the intake manifold for the throttle body to get that one out by pushing it in onto a wire then pulling it out through the TB opening. You can't do that on the pump. If you use something to cut through it length-wise to loosen it, you take the chance of pieces falling into the pump. Take the pump off and cutting it so debris falls outward I suppose it could work. Best to leave it!
