Need information on gas tank fittings - 98 900 SE Turbo

Hi everyone,
I have a 98 900 Turbo SE Convertible that has had intermittent issues with fuel. Sometimes it starts and runs but eventually stops, then doesn't start for days. I had the pump replaced and the people that did the work did a poor job, so I am taking it on myself. When I dropped the tank, one of the breather hose fittings (hard plastic) snapped. It is connected to some sort of cylinder within the tank, also plastic. It seems to be threaded (perhaps press-fit?), but I can't budge it. There is another breather connection on the other side of the pump opening as well that has the same method of attachment.
I don't know what this connector is, or how to remove it, and not knowing what it is, don't know what I need to look for as a replacement. Incidentally, there's a fine gray deposit of very, very fine silt that absolutely covers the bottom of the tank. Very thin layer, and wipes up easily - but I'm wondering if it could have caused the intermittent starvation.
Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
