While driving along, one of the trim pieces on the side of the windshield came loose. It remained attached long enough to get stopped so I could remove it the rest of the way.

The problem was that when I had the windshield replaced, the tech just pried the trim pieces off, and in the process, tore out the holes that are used to keep them in place. They were reassembled with some black goop, which failed after a few years. Fortunately, I was able to find some replacements at the junkyard. The left-side trim piece is still available on-line, but not the right side so far as I could discover.

It turns out that it is very easy to remove the trim pieces and you only need a needle nose pliers. A screwdriver is optional. To do it, proceed as follows...

1. Open the door and pull the door seal away from the side of the windshield. This will reveal the four white plastic clips that hold the trim in place.

2. To undo the white plastic clips, use the needle nose pliers to remove the small pegs from the plastic clip. There's one in the middle of each clip. The pegs spread the legs of the clips and secure them in the holes in the pillar.

3.The trim piece can now just be gently pulled off along with the white clips. If a goop was used at some time to hold the trim in place, you may need to pry a bit.

Reassembly is the reverse. Attach the white plastic clips to the windshield trim piece, slide it into place, pop the white clips into their hole in the pillar, and then insert the little pegs.

If you are going to have the windshield replaced, it is probably a good idea to remove the side trim pieces yourself.
