How to incorrectly install a water pump? 2 Saabers Like This Post!

I replaced the water pump before and it went as well as can be expected. But yesterday, after the install and everything was buttoned up, I started to fill the expansion tank and it began leaking badly. I thought it can't be the water pump as the O-rings, even if not the exact size, would not allow that much coolant to pass unless they were somehow pushed out of place. They were well-lubed. So I redid everything and it seems ok now. What I remember is, the first time, the adapter tube into the block was flush, the one large tab fit into the slot on the right side perfectly and it was pushed in up to the smaller tab. The second time, after the coolant pipes, the U-tube and the lower rad hose was assembled, the tabs lined up as before, the pump sat kind of cockeyed yet it sealed, although my confidence is not so confident. It seems it can go in only one way after the mounting bolts are inserted, no? Sorry, no pics.
On the bright side, I saved a lot doing it myself. Not only that, but I did it twice, so my savings were doubled!
