The original synthetic's were engineered in the lab to create an
oil with just the properties that were needed in an oil - with none
of the side effects from the portions of organic oil that are
troublesome. So, it's built from the ground up.
Castrol then worked in the lab to do the opposite - take a dino
oil and engineer out all the portions that are uneeded and cause
problems.
The end result is the same. An oil with all the properties you want.
Mobil did proceed against Castrol via some official advertising
organization claiming that it could not be advertised as a synthetic
if any portion was not artificially constructed. Mobil lost, and
Castrol can advertise their oil as synthetic.
So, what *is* a synthetic ? It all comes down to your definition
of what "is", is.
