If the knocking usually happens when cornering it may you your universal/cv joints. It could be a number of things but that is what first popped into my mind. When you get a chance get under the car and check the rubber boots that surrond the joints. Make sure they don't have any tears, gently spread the folds apart and check for tears and cracks, you should have 4 joints to check. Also, the other, just in case thing, make sure all your lug bolts are correctly tightened. A way to check your cv joints while driving, go into a smooth parking lot, and do a few slow full lock figure 8s. Listen for a clicking noise or the noise you described. The cv could very well be the culprit.
While you are under the car check the front suspension for things that look out of the ordinary and insure everything is good and tight, preferably while the car is on jack stands.
If the noise you hear occurs while cornering and hitting bumps at the same time, there could be a problem with the strut bearings and mount. There is a TSP out on this and upgraded parts are available to the tune of $US 100+ a side. Good luck and let us know what it winds up being so we will be even more educated.
