Last year I had a 240 Volvo in for its 150,000 service. As part of the service, I replaced all the belts ...including the Timing Belt. Several days later It came back running very rough and a bad loss of power. On examination, the belt had slipped. This engine will not self destruct on a timing belt malfunction THANK GOD!
This engine also has a self adjuster for tension. Once proper tension is acheived a nut is tightened. There is no way the tensioner is going to move when the lock nut is tightened. Well the belt tension was good and nothing was loose. I removed the belt and inspected it ...it looked perfect. The gears all looked good. So I put a new belt on it and sent it on its way. If the problem was a gear or tensioner It should have come back by now. Its been over a year and no problems. The belt was a German Continetal. I have used this brand and done this job many times. The point Is what if this was the V6? No matter how you look at it, its a time bomb.
