I finally got the proper filter from the dealer (because the Euro-parts store gave me the wrong part) and replaced it for the first time at 51,000 miles. I don't recommend that anybody does this because it looked pretty nasty with a lot of caked on dirt. However, there were no ill effects to the ventilation system that I am aware of. The air still circulated fine and it didn't smell either.
If you live in a non-dusty area I don't think you would have to replace it (or wash it) more than every 20,000 miles. I followed these instructions posted by somebody a long time ago and it took me an hour total but it was easy. I am by no means mechanically inclined, so fear not! All you need is a small screw driver to pop the caps off the wiper arms, and a socket driver to unbolt the wipers. The parts need a little maneuvering and after I took off the second cover I did take off the hood to cowl seal but it goes back on real easy.
Good luck,
Atul

TO GET TO THE CABIN AIR FILTER YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE STEPS.
1. YOU MUST TAKE OFF THE WINSHIELD WIPERS ARMS INCLUDED. YOU WILL SEE SMALL
BLACK PLUGS WHICH COVER THE BOLTS UNDO THOSE (marking the orientation of the wiper arms beforehand) AND TAKE OF THE WIPERS.
2. THE BLACK PLASTIC COVER WHICH FITS PLUSH WITH THE WINDOW MUST ALSO COME OFF.
tHIS IS EASY THERE ARE NO CLIPS IT KINDA FITS SNUG UNDER THE PLASTIC MOLDING ON
THE BOTTOM PART OF THE WINDOW.
3. UNDERNEATH THE FIRST COVER YOU WILL FIND A SECOND COVER THAT COVERS THE MOTOR
TO THE WINSHIELD WASHER, THIS IS ALSO A SNAP IN PLACE COVER.
ONCE YOU TAKE THAT OFF YOU WILL SEE THE CABIN FILTER.
IT HAS CLIPS ON THE RIGHT SIDE.UNDO THE CLIPS AND SLIDE IT OUT ITS KINDA TRICKY
BUT THIS IS THE EXTENT OF THE WHOLE PROCEDURE.
GOOD LUCK
ANDREAS
