My rear wiper arm became loose and was not engaging the splines. I swung up the plastic cover and found the 10mm nut was loose. There was no metal dammage or wear particles. I had seen posts where others had such issues in the past. The strange thing is that when the wiper arm was swung up for cleaning or blade replacement, this spline joint has always felt loose and since the vehicle was new (5.5 yrs). So it appears that these things have not been properly tightened or will not stay tighened. The nut and threads were clean and rust free. Perhaps locktite will be needed. The nut has a captive free spinning washer which might contribute to its coming undone. I had thought that this was some kind if strange attachment and that this looseness was normal.... not!
I have lost yet another placic cap which covers the nut on the front wiper arms. It seems that one you remove one of these, to replace or clean the cabin air filter, they do not have the same fit any more. The pressure washers at the car wash will dislodge them. And one appears to have disappeared from brushing out the snow, even though it is protected quite well by the hood. After they get loose, you can't find them, they blow out or find their way through some drainage passages. So for now, one is covered with some aluminum foil duct tape to keep the threads clean and dry.
