Clutch cable yank = disaster

In an effort to ease my stiff clutch I did the "yank" manoevre on the cable but I think I must have pulled to hard. At first the pedal was "floppy" for about 90% of it's travel and only just allowed me to disengage reverse, so I fiddled about with the cable again and managed to get it so that I can change gear. I'm left with "floppy" for half the pedal travel, then just as stiff a push as before and engagement just as the pedal hits the floor.
Any suggestions ? Everyone else who's done this says they're left with a sweet clutch again - certainly not the case with me.
