Owning a Saab is not for the faint of heart. Let me tell you a story.
When my daughter decided to leave college and needed a car to get around, we picked up an '85 900 one owner with 108K miles and all the records. Did all the right things; took it to a Saab mechanic, checked it over, and the price was right, so we went for it.
She loved that car. The problem was, every time something broke, it cost a fortune. And break they do. We finally got her a japanese econobox and kept the Saab for my younger daughter, who then trashed the clutch. I traded it on my current '95 SET.
The moral of the story is: don't pay too much in the first place, because if you have to make payments on this car, you'll have to decide whether to make the payment, pay the mechanic, or pay your rent. If you buy right, and have a good mechanic handy, the Saab is worth the effort. But if you have a low tolerance for a car in the shop, get a Honda. Not as sexy, but, bulletproof. And, those Honda and Toyota engines will run 200K if treated right, but the bodies may not. And that is the difference between them and Saab/Volvo.
Peace, Dennis
