On many (all modern) Saab turbo engines the ignition system is a module that sits on top of the 4 spark plugs, between the two cam shafts and valve trains. It is held in with 4 screws and easily lifts out to expose the spark plugs.
The trionic ECU monitors the ionization resiantance across the spark plug gaps and can detect mis (non) fire events and knocking. So the engine does not have a classic knock sensor, only the plugs. That is why the correct plugs are essential. The ECU can tinker with timing and mixture on a cylinder by cylinder basis to cope with knock.
At lower RPM's, if there is a non ignition event, the system detects this and will hit the cylinder with one or more sparks to ignite the cylinder charge. Several other interesting igniton features exist as well.
The four coils are are triggered by 400 volts. The module is epoxy potted into the large aluminum base, and is not serviceable. The black plastic part that covers the coils and recieves the spark plugs can be removed, and you can see the oil in the spark plug coil plastic housings. About all you can determine this way is whether there is a crack and oil leaking out.
There are about 12 wires running to the DI cassette which is a measure of the control the ECU has over its functionality.
