clutch release/throwout bearing replacement cost (95 900 SE 2.0t)

Hello
Last week my clutch cable was replaced to fix the fact that the clutch wouldn't fully disengage when the pedal was pushed all the way to the floor, so I couldn't shift the car.
That repair (at Barrier Saab, Bellevue WA) lasted about 10 miles, and the car had to be towed back to the dealership. They've called me this morning and told me that the clutch release/throwout bearing has failed and needs to be replaced. They told me this will cost $1488.00! This seems like an outrageously high price.
The car has 94,000 miles on it. The transmission was replaced under warranty at 46,000 miles; and the clutch was replaced with it. Should this part wear out in just 48,000 miles since replacement? Am I correct to assume that this is a wear item and my extended warranty won't cover it?
Thanks for your feedback-
Kevin Miller
