I thought only the 2.3 engines had the balance shafts. Who knows maybe I am wrong. At any rate, to the best of my knowlege the timing chain is up front, ie toward the radiator. If the noise is coming from the back, based on your description, it sounds like a problem with one of the lifters. Here are a couple of ideas for you. First, get some engine cleaner, I use the Amsoil stuff, I will end my note with a number you can use if you order it. It is called "Engine Flush" You should only need one can, two if you want to keep one handy. Cost is 4.50 + shipping. They also have a website. Amsoil.com. The second solution, if you happen to have some automatic transmission fluid around pour half a quart in while the car is running. DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR OR REV THE ENGINE OVER 1,500!! It is important that you don't put any load on the engine. The tranny fluid has numerous cleaners in it and will also clean the engine. Not as well as the engine flush, but it works in a pinch. Drain all the oil and change as you normally would. You may have to do this once or twice, but it should quiet the lifter by allowing it to pump full of oil quicker. If it does not quiet the lifter, then you may have a worn or malfunctioning valve, valve guide, lifter etc. Anyway it is well worth the try. While your at it try the Amsoil line of lubes, you will be happy you did. I am.

Bryan C.
