Fuel Gauge Sensor Testing Question

Had a close encounter with some sort of metal object on the Mass Pike today. Was very lucky - initial strike was at pass side tie down ring (now has embedded red paint on it!). It must of also wacked the exhaust - can't see the strike, but much louder. Missed all the other vital stuff . . .
However, it seemed at the same time that the fuel gauge dropped dramatically - thought I had punctured the tank, but there was no smell, stains or leaks. Filled up before I went home just so I knew I had a full tank. Got home and pulled off the plastic cover under the rear seat to test the sensor. There were two sets of two-conductor connectors. One measured ~0 ohms - I assuming that was for the fuel pump.
I could not get a constant reading on the other connector; my DMM would register 0 ohms then around 95 then 0 then 195 then 0 and so on. The dash fuel gauge is reading a constant 2/3 tank though. I am assuming the fuel level sensor is shot, either coincidence or from the impact; but why the strange readings on the multimeter??
