The issue about seals stems from very early experience with these oil bases in the 1979's when it was found that there were substances in dyno oil which happened to keep seals supple, that synthetic oil did not have. That has been dealt with by the modern addative packages.
There is the thought that an engine may have seals and other gaps sealed with sludge and deposits that when removed will cause leaks. Modern oils are much better than those that use to create such deposits. Syntheic oils are flow better and as such will leak more oil than dyno oil in a leaky engine. But when I switched from Castrol syntec, (not a true synthetic oil) to Mobil 1, my leaking rear seal reduced its leakage by a large amount!
There a many negative stories about synthetic oil. Many have no merit.
95SET
castrol syntec fake synthetic from 0 to 110000 miles, Mobil 1 to date at 130000 miles.
