I think you're on the right track looking at the '98 models. That's the last full year of production for the 900 series, and by then they'd pretty much worked the worst of the bugs out. You should be able to get a good deal on a 5-door, though if you like the wind the convertible is worth looking into. I just got a great deal on a '98 900 SET convertible, and I'm loving every minute of it.

If you're concerned about mystery breakdowns at inopportune times, I'd shy away from anything before 1997, especially if you don't have a quality Saab mechanic nearby.

P.S. One note - tooling around in a turbocharged Saab will certainly be a different experience than your "old reliable" Honda. Saabs might be a little finnicky sometimes, but they're worth it!
