Dear all,

Would really appreciate your help. The clutch on my 96 900 SET (105,000 miles) has not given me any problems until last night. I parked it (on the street in Manhattan), killed the engine, then decided to adjust the car slightly, turned on the engine, and found out that I can't put the car into gear with the engine running. When the engine is off, the gear shifts OK, but not when the engine is on. I first thought the cable broke off, but the (non-SAAB) mechanic who picked the car up (the only place that was open that late) said that it can't be cable-the pedal would be on the floor, and it isn't. When I step on the pedal, the resistance is still there, although noticeably weaker than it normally is.

So, the mechanic (who I don't know and am suspicious of) says he will look into it tomorrow (Friday) but he believes the clutch is gone and it will be "very expensive" to fix. My own SAAB mechanic, to whom I described the situation on the phone, doubts it is the clutch (again, there was never a problem with the clutch before). He says the cable, which is self-adjusting, may have just slipped, whatever that means.

So, tomorrow morning I am going to the mechanic who has the car now and will probably try to persuade me that it is a multi-thousand dollar problem with the clutch. Any suggestions as to what the real problem may be and how can I test it? Right now I am inclined to tow the car either to a SAAB dealer across town or to my mechanic in the Queens, even though it will be another couple of hunderd bucks.

As always, your advice is highly appreciated. Thanks, and happy Thanksgiving
