I had a '97 SET that went into a phase where it seemed to take a little extra time to start. Shortly thereafter, the battery failed. It was my fault - I never checked the cells, and when it died, every single cell was bone-dry. My guess is that you could have the same problem. You could try adding a little distilled water to the cells to bring the levels up to the full mark (do NOT overfill!). If the cells are already near empty, you may not be able to salvage the battery, but you may prolong its life a bit.
As for being sluggish, a fresh set of plugs may be in order. Get the proper NGK plugs. Saabs are one of the simplist cars I've ever changed the plugs on - you can have it done in less than 1/2 an hour as a beginner.
