I'm starting to think (without actually looking at the manuals, yet..) that the chain tensioner is tied to the oil pump somehow, either mechanically or operationally. All these posts about dropping mpg, engine sludge and throwing rods has my little mental gears turning.
I think you'd have to pull the front (engine) cover to check, but haven't looked for/found the details yet. IIRC, someone below posted that it was an hours labor to pull the front cover. If I had to guess, I'd say 5 hours to replace the tensioner.
I've been thinking of delving into my engine to hunt for sludge and to track down a slight ticking noise that I hear right after start up. I'm really paranoid now.
Have I said yet that this will probably be my last Saab?
