Don't get excited.
I have a 1995 900S with 57K miles and an automatic transmission. I have not done any "modifications" and I always use premium grade fuel (Amoco Gold). My problem is this: my Saab moans, groans and yells at me; in two distincly different ways. First, the very first time I press the accelerator in "DRIVE" after starting the car, the engine moans like a fricken' banshee. It continues until I completely let my foot off the accelerator, and even if I go back and gas it right after I let off, the moan is gone. It's hard to describe the moan - it's pretty loud and somewhat low-pitched. (It's not a shriek or a squeek.) Also, it doesn't happen all the time. It only happens when the car is cold and hasn't been turned on for awhile, and even then, it does not ALWAYS happen. Performance and electrical functions are affected at all. Now the second groan sounds NOTHING like the first moan. This one has gotten progressively worse since if first noticed it a month or two ago. It happens whenever I accelerate, regardless of gear, heaviness of acceleration, weather/temperature, or engine heat. The sound tapers off as the car gets up to speed. This groan is much more subtle thatn the other one I described, and it is a very HOLLOW sound. It's not very loud, and it isn't "knocking" or anything like that. Performance does not seem to be affected, and the idle is smooth on the tachometer but the sound of the idle is not. It's somewhat loud and hollow-sounding as well, and the whole car vibrates when idling. I am also getting very bad mileage (for all-city driving), approx. 15 to 19 MPG. Could the bad mileage be related to the moaning/groaning? And another thing: the auto tranny shifts very hard and very abrubtly. I can feel every gear change. The dealer agreed and said that it was indeed shifting hard and abrubtly, "but not bad enough to fix anything." The transmission fluid was flushed/changed about a year ago. The oil was changed appox. 3,000 miles ago; last June. I have no idea if spark plugs are relevant... but maybe it's them? Time for a new belt? O2 sensor? I really have no idea what could be wrong. Because the only problem I notice are these hideous sounds and no other functions or aspects of the car seem to be failing (besides bad mileage and the abrubt/hard shifting, whichm now that I think of it, actually are pretty bad problems), I have not taken it to the dealer. I don't have any money to waste! I know this is confusing and unclear, but please help! I want my Saab to last as long as possible!
