This does not sound right, at least as far as engine performance goes. Having 4 og 900 turbos and now a 1994 NG900 turbo, I can say I have observed one thing, the engine performance, smoothness, including gas mileage has consistently improved with each later model. I know I am talking about turbos, but this should apply to the normally aspirated models as well. Your car should be looked at.
1984 8v 2.0 t = 135 hp
1986 16v 2.0 t = 160 hp
1988 spg 16v 2.0 t = 165 hp
1994 16v 2.0 t = 185 hp
2000 16v 2.0 t = 205 hp
As you see, constant refinement, at least with the engine. Now the utility of the NG vs. the OG, the NG's front suspension and mechanical clutch - thats a different matter, like...some steps backward.
