All Saab turbos after 1987 run turbos which are cooled by oil AND water. The pre-1987 turbos were oil cooled only and ran much, much hotter which necessitated Saab's recommendation of a 30-45 second idle before shutdown to prevent coke-ing of the turbo bearing/shaft.
According to Saab, since 1987 this is NOT necessary as the oil/water cooled turbos run much cooler and do not have this problem. This is evidenced by the almost non-existance of turbo failure on post-1987 turbos. Yes, a few still fail (every time I say this someone replies with "mine failed...they ALL must be the same as mine!! Not true.), but its relatively rare and for reasons other than coke buildup on the bearings and shaft.
We almost never see any turbo problems on this board.
Do what you want, but I believe turbo cooldown is unnecessary on post-87's.
Nick.
