Marybeth, I feel your pain. I've had expensive repairs on my car as well, but it is because I went to a new care dealer rather than going to a reputable independent mechanic. New car dealers have a higher billing rate for labor and tend to charge 30% or more for parts. It's just how new car dealerships make money. (e.g. a dealer charged me $125 for one brake rotor. I found the same part for $70 at an independent shop).

Independent mechanics charge much less for parts and labor. Moreover, if you find a good independent shops, they will offer comperable, if not superior worksmanship over new car dealers. They tend to be more honest too. Click on the link below, it's a list of independent mechanics in NY state. Or better yet, put a post on this board asking for recommendations for independent garages around the area you.

A lot of Saab owners read this board (including the independent mechanics). Post whatever is wrong with your car on this board and I'm sure you'll get a lot of input. Also, if you think a dealer or any other mechanic is being less than forthright with you, tell this board who they are and what they said. Keeps everyone honest. Good reputations, like bad ones, spread very quickly as well. ;) A lot of people on this board are real "Saabheads" 'cause they've got nothing better to do, and are a wealth of information. Good luck.
