If you can look for a Snap-On or MAC tools dealer. Ask for a catalog and make up a wish list and as Michael said get a tool a month. If you can't find one of these then Craftsman is a good choice. They all have lifetime warranty. Buy a modular tool chest. These are available from any of the sources I mentioned. Start off with a dool chest that you can put on your workbench and buy the rolling cabinet when you run out of room in that. (Note: I said when not if.) Without a good place to store your tools they tend to get lost.
If you are serious enough consider a small air compressor and some air tools. I have a 3/8 air ratchet and a 1/2 air gun along with tire inflator and blowout nozzles.
The last tip applies if you are married or otherwise cohabiting with a significant other. Get a small tool kit for the house with the basics like a hammer, pliers, screwdrivers, etc. That way YOUR tools stay in the garage where they belong.
