Throttle position sensor

Hi, I think I have narrowed my accelleration hesitation problem down to the TPS. I reckon it is worn at the position where the throttle is most often at (i.e normal steady driving when up to speed - 2500rpm)
I removed the sensor and measured its resitance, but a digital meter is no good for seeing worn regions on poentiometers. I ran the car with the connector to the TPS removed and the problem has gone. Is it safe to run like this while I get a new TPS (or save up for a new TPS!) The only problem I notice is high idling. Will it damage the engine or cause excessive fuel consumption with it disconnected? What does it do anyway, apart from affecting the idle speed?
Thanks.
