It should go off after ~20 minutes of driving or a certain number of starts, if there are no other faults. I briefly unplugged mine trying to pin down a high idle condition and found the CEL still illuminated when I put it back together. The light eventually went out (that day, IIRC). If not then it's time for a visit to the dealer. My service manager chastised me for fiddling with the electronics while the car was running, said the voltage spikes can cause damage.
