alternator starts to "whir", higher-pitch, noticeable in the passenger compartment, right before it goes, my experience (1 saab and 3 mustang alternators) is about 2-3 days regular driving. You'll know when absolutely everything in the car goes dead, or when you turn the key and absolutely nothing happens, no lights, no "clicks" like a low battery. Unpleasant, I'd check it out right away.
