I replaced my fuel filter at 108000 miles on my 95SET, summer of 2000. I let it dry a few weeks then tore it open, which is not easy to do.
The media did not seem very dirty, and some of the media showed not sign of dirt at all. The design is such that the element material acts like this and if you unroll it out, it is quite long, you can see this.
So my conclusion was that these filters are good for well over 100000 miles. But that might not be true if you were getting some contaminated fuel, but how would you know?
When a fuel filter is getting restrictive, or a pump is wearing out, the pressure will drop at higher fuel delivery rates. This often shows up as a speed wall. For example, I wore out a fuel pump on a Volvo V6 PRV engine and at full throttle I could get to 80mph but no faster.
So the above are early signs that there is a fuel system capacity problem. This type of problem will show no signs of problems for starting or moderate loads etc. But a severe problem or pump malfunction could show up with starting problems etc.
But, with your 95, one can consider that the vehicle is near mid life age wise and replacing things like fuel filters is not a bad idea. These are not too expensive. Four new steel and rubber sealing washers should be used with the filter.
