I'm new to the board, just bought a '96 Saab 900s convertible. I grew up around Saabs (my folks had a '69 station wagon with the shifter on the steering column). Anyway, there are a few problems with the car that I have questions about.

The car intermitently overheats; sometimes the heat guage pegs itself, the warning light comes on, and then shuts off with the peg falling rapidly. Other times I can drive the car miles with the peg exactly halfway, only to have it shoot rapidly to H and have the light come on. Only once did I lose fluids due to overheating. Does this sound like a thermostat? I assume the waterpump either works or doesn't, and by the looks of the coolant, I can rule out blockage.

Also, the backup lights don't work. Fuses look good, wiring intact, bulbs are good. Where do I begin looking?

Finally, the convertible top, when lowering, requires the boot to be held back to let the rest of the top tuck under. The rubber stops by the hinges appear to be not allowing the boot to go al the way back. Is this a motor adjustment, or hinges?

Who makes a good manual for this car? I'd like something other than a chiltons or Haynes. Any suggestions?

I appreciate in advance any responses to help me get this car 100%. BTW, picked it up w/119K miles for 9.8K, runs like a top (hey, it's a Saab, right!).
