You need a new axle driver!

I have a 1996 900SE, manual transmission, with 71K miles. The other night I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd when I couldn't find the gear. I then tried every other gear, but couldn't get out of neutral. After aabout 30 seconds, I found my gear and drove on. The next morning I took my car to the shop, it drove fine. They told me my release bearing had seized and I needed a new clutch and clutch cable. I told them to go ahead and they charged me $1250. On my way home my car would vibrate every time I accelerated. I turned around and went back to the shop. They told me my Axle Driver was worn. I never heard of an axle driver, but was pissed that they didn't tell me before I left their shop. My car was driving fine before I took it there, with the exception of the gear thing. I have 3 question for anyone that can help me. 1.. What the heck is an Axle driver? 2.. How much do they cost to replace? 3.. Why did it go bad in the shop and not while I was driving it? Thanks in advance.
