I just had this idea of how to hook up an iPod or mp3 player of your choice, (but really have no idea if it would work) without really disturbing the changer too much or the head unit at all.

Very roughly stated, it would go something like this:
1. make an adapter for the changer jack that would let all control wires connect to the same wires running to the head unit that they currently do.

2. out of the adapter re-route only the line level inputs out to a stereo mini jack.

3. better than just leaving that jack there, run a single stereo cable through (follow the existing wire) and back to the head unit area, or really anywhere reasonable in the cockpit.

4. mount it back in somewhere with a female stereo mini jack.

5. attach your iPod or mp3 player up front and you can control it by hand (at red lights only of course) -- some kind of adjustment surely needs to be made to adjust for line/amp levels...details details.

6. unplug the head unit cable from the changer and drop in your adapter, connecting back to the changer (mostly) and to your stereo input cable.

7. leave one cd at least in the changer. that way the head unit will switch to cd mode and think it's playing (looping that one cd forever) but its stereo output isn't connected to anything, rather your own stereo output is conected to your mp3 player up front with you.

my idea is to not bother knowing or messing with the control unit's protocols or getting deep into electronics, the changer speaks the protocols, so let them keep talking, just trick the head into allowing audio to flow on the CD mode and patch in a different audio source.

it would only really take stringing that one cable back to the cockpit, and making a radio-shack based straight through adapter/extension/plug, but rerouting the audio inputs...

The key here is that if you want your cd changer back you just unplug your adapter out of the trunk, and no damage has been done to either changer or head...nothing! head controls amp volume, your player controls audio out volume, so you'll have to adjust for that to avoid noise.

thoughts?
