What you are seeing sounds quite normal. It takes a long time to get all of this stuff out of an engine. So you might see the amounts of magnetic mud on the magnet decrease over time.

How did you manage with that fiber washer? They are scary things. If you don't know what to do with them the drain plug could be lost.

(these super magnet/stainless drain plugs are around $27 ea, see avlube.com and go automotive then look for:

Volkswagen & TDI Super Magnet Drain Plug This is not your typical magnetic drain plug! The plug itself is machined from high quality stainless steel and then a 'super magnet' affixed which is so strong that it actually acts as a very effective filter, pulling iron and steel wear compoments from the engine oil, reducing oil filter loading and reducing oil oxididation rates. Plus, if something is going wrong in the engine, your drain plug will give you early warning! Transorms oil changes into engine wear evaluation! A must for every Volkswagen and TDI owner!

The VW & TDI unit fits the Saabs. You will need a 7/8" socket. I suggest that you NOT use the fiber washer.

The point of these is twofold. If you see large chunks of metal you know you have a serious problem, perhaps you can fix before the engine is a total loss. And normal wear from the cam lobes, cylinders, oil pump and piston rings produce particles that are so small that a full flow filter will not remove them. But the are around the same thickness of oil films in bearings etc, and the hard steel and iron particles will cause wear to the soft babbit bearing etc. The only way to effectively remove such things is to have a bypass filter or drain you oil. A magnet can be effective. Some folks put high strength magnets on the outside of the oil filters.
