Engine definitely runs rougher with non-synthetic. I can feel the difference right away, always. Used to feel it with 10W-30, exactly the same with 10W-40. I am sure it will return to normal "smoother" running after I change it to synthetic 5W-40 in a week.

It was a different story with my mom's Subaru Impreza. I actually noticed a clear improvement in smoothness and quietness when I switched from Mobil 1 10W-30 to Havoline 10W-40 (same as Chevron Supreme, now that Texaco is ChevronTexaco). Subarus are pretty noisy when cold, with valve lifters making a loud tapping sound, both with hydraulic and mechanical followers. With 10W-40, even non-synthetic, the tapping became much less noticeable, almost gone. The engine runs much smoother. I will be switching back to Mobil 1 10W-30 for the winter.

Mobil 1. 10W-30 in the summer, 5W-30 in the winter. I think I'll be using xW-40 from now on. Probably Lubro Moly, until euro-spec Mobil 1 becomes more widely available. I talked to Mobil 1 customer service recently, asking them about retail availability of 0W-40. They state that it is nationally available at AutoZone on their web site. Not true here on the East Coast. I called AutoZone and they claim they don't carry it. Mobil 1 person said that it *is* sold through some West Coast AutoZone stores and they are trying hard to make it available nationwide. He also mentioned that they are working on an Internet store that will carry 0W-40. SAAB uses Mobil 1 0W-40 as factory fill, and they recommend it for service as well.

I wish US retailers would take their heads out of their a**es and realize that people want the euro-spec oils. They are loosing money by not carrying 0W-40 and 5W-40.
