On the first real hot day this summer (April already at @ 98 degrees) my A/C ran low on 134 in my 94 SE. I charged with a 10.00 can of refrigerant/oil and put in a can of leak detector dye. I could find no leaks with the UV light so I suspect the evap, which (as you know) is expensive and a real pain to install.

So I did the math. 1100.00 for evap replacement in a 8 year old car with 100,000 miles. I will only drive this thing another couple of years or 150,000. A can of refrige/oil is needed about every 30 days @ 10.00/can. It is hotter n' hell where I live for 6-7 months out of the year. This is 7 cans of refrig/oil a year or about 70.00/yr. Over a two year period this comes out to 140.00 vs. 1100.00 for the evap. Guess what I am going to do?

I know this may not be environmentally friendly with the release of 134a into the air, but we all have to make choices.

Besides, anyday now the compressor could croak anyway as well as the possibility of the transmission (man.)going south. I got my money's worth out of my car and have enjoyed it, but you have to be realistic about how much your car is worth and how much money you will dump in it and for what kind of repairs. Essential items are engine and drivetrain, everything else on a car this age is a "luxury".
