Just a follow up for archival purposes...I replaced the thermostat and all is well now. Ect sensor was right about coolant temp as the thermo was generally stuck open. That kept the gauge down low and triggered the check engine light.
Actually the old thermo looked ok, but the gasket was all brittle. Anyway, its only $15 for a new SAAB thermo. Seems like 900s w/ 85-90k miles should need this replaced.
