Sometime last autumn my temperature gauge ('95 900S) started misbehaving. Sometimes it would go from the 9 o'clock position to below "L", then maybe somewhere in between those positions, back to "L", back to "9", etc. I replace the temperature sensor (only $18), and also the thermostat since it was time to change the fluid anyway. Having done that, I figured the problem was cured. But no, the very next time I drove the car the gauge did the same thing. Out of frustration I used my open hand to whack the top of the dash over the temperature gauge. I couldn't believe it when the needle jumped from "L" to the correct reading at the 9 o'clock position. So to this day this is how I have "solved" the problem, which happens every time I drive the car.

I read a posting several months ago about a wiring harness that runs very close to the radio chassis and gets "eaten" with time by the corner of that chassis. I suspect it might one of the wires in this harness that has had its insulation worn off and is sporadically shorting. If it wasn't such a pain removing my radio I would check this theory out. To remove my radio means removing the glove-box and under-dash skirting, since when I upgraded my audio system I had to use a Radio Shak, straight-in amplifier jack to the side of the radio, and that jack of course has to be removed before the head unit can be pulled out of the dash.

So far the whack-on-the-dash technique always works. Don't hit it as if you are trying to break something, just hard enough to get its attention.
