I just replaced my clutch & trans this weekend on my 1998 900SET. The car has about 91,000 miles on original parts.
The trans was damaged due to driver abuse. It happened during a high-performance driving school where I let a friend drive the car, and he assumed that speed shifting was ok and he didn't know how to rev-match on downshifts, etc. Anyway I lost 2nd and 3rd gear synchros, and later some bearings. The tranny died, but we are still friends :)
Back to the clutch repair - It drove just fine with smooth, quiet engagement. But inside it was almost wasted. The disc was worn almost to the rivets and the surfaces were blackened and cracked like the ground in the desert. The springs in the hub were loose and beat up from spinning/moving around. Both the flywheel and pressure plate had a bluish mottled appearance.
I found a low-mileage 1998 donor car (34k miles) at the Saab Dismantler in Rancho Cordova, CA (916-635-9970) and bought the trans ($950) and clutch ($50). I included the used donor clutch because of cost (dealer kit is $325) and because the donor car parts looked like new. I want to thank the owner of that side-swiped '98 SE Coupe 5-speed for being so nice to his trans!
I would highly recommend getting the Saab Manual Transmission shop manual (about $15) before beginning cluch or trans work. I had to improvise in a couple spots because the '98 has updates that were not in the book (hydraulic clutch line, different axle support bearing bracket), but most of the steps were right-on. DS
